Acting agents are the way that many actors connect with the auditions and casting calls that they go on. They do what sports agents and music industry agents do, which is (ostensibly), promoting their clients, getting them work, and negotiating beneficial terms for them in their contracts.
Acting agents sometimes get a bad rep because some are less scrupulous than others. These (probably) less reputable agents will sometimes charge you a fee before signing you up, and then once you are "on board," you may find yourself wondering what ever happened to your agent, as you haven't heard from her in about two months, after numerous phone calls to the office.
Hopefully, you have not gotten yourself mixed up with one of these types of acting agents, and you are happily on your way to an enjoyable and lucrative acting career. Acting agents can be useful but are not always necessary if you know how to get connected with the information that's out there about upcoming auditions and casting calls. They are, however, a necessary tool once you have become fairly successful, as they can help you get better roles and keep you from getting ripped off in contract negotiations.
