You're a teen, you dream of acting, you love going on auditions, what more is there to life? That is certainly the ideal. Working in a field that you love, making a good living, hob-knobbing with Hollywood personalities at gala industry cocktail parties... but wait, you're a teen. If you want to go on auditions you have to ask your parents, and probably get a ride from them, unless your plan is to tell them you're going to the mall and then sneak out to take the bus over to the open auditions for the new Fig Newtons commercial. If you want to even get into acting you probably have to ask their permission. Many parents don't consider acting a viable or legitimate career for anyone, let alone their teen son or daughter.

Being a teen is hard enough even if you're not trying to get into acting and going on auditions during your spare time when you're not at school, doing homework, or being with your family. This is precisely why many parents choose to discourage their teen from going on auditions or even thinking about acting until they have at least graduated from high school. On the flip side, however, are the parents who are very supportive and even make sacrifices in their own lives so that their teen can have opportunities to do some acting while they still are in high school.

Auditions may be difficult for the teen who is trying to get into acting. Many teens have some issues with self-esteem and self confidence (like adults are any different), and even if they are the most self-assured, confident teen in the world, the type of abusive, discouraging language they may hear at some auditions could be enough to convince them that acting is not so great. If you have chosen to encourage your teen to follow their dreams of acting on the silver screen, prepare them for such eventualities. If you're a teen and are considering acting, wondering what auditions are like, ask around, look up books by actors in the library, and if mom and dad say it's okay, go on a few auditions to get a feel for it.
