You can avoid going on auditions if you want to be an actor by: having a best friend that is a well known, famous, working actor who is so respected and in demand that all he has to do is recommend someone for a part and they'll toss you in there just because they want to have him in the project, having a best friend who owns a studio and can put anyone they want in any production they want because they own the studio, having a best friend who has their own production company and likes you so much that they will give you a part in a movie they're making just because you're such a great guy, or be independently wealthy (or spend your life's savings) and produce your own film that has a special part in it created just for you.

In fact, all of these are real situations that happen all the time and have been happening since the industry's infancy. The problem is that very few of us have friends who own movie studios, are fantastically famous actors, or own their own production companies, and just as few of us are independently wealthy or even have a life savings. So that leaves us with auditions (in various forms) as the main way that we come to get acting work. Acting auditions are a huge, although in many respects, very hidden aspect of the industry. For the most part, no production can be made without them, and hardly anyone can get acting work without going on them.

Don't be afraid, you can still find that stinking rich friend who can produce a movie just for you (the old-fashioned way), but in the meantime, if you're serious about acting, auditions are your friend. You can have fun and learn a lot at auditions, just open your ears and eyes and pay attention to what's going on around you. Take something positive away from the experience, even if you don't get the part.
